How I Use AI as a Tool in My Workflow

AI is a bit of a buzzword in the photography world right now. Some people love it, some are sceptical, and others worry it means photographers are letting a computer do all the work. So, I wanted to share exactly how I use AI in my workflow—not to replace what I do, but to help me focus on what really matters: delivering the best photos to my couples.

Culling: Choosing the Best Moments

One of the most time-consuming parts of wedding photography is culling—sorting through thousands of photos to find the best ones. I use Aftershoot to help speed up this process. It works by ranking images based on sharpness, facial expressions, and duplicates, but it’s not a final decision-maker.

Once Aftershoot has done its initial ranking, I go in and manually check everything. It helps me focus on the best images first, but ultimately, I decide which ones meet my quality standards.

Editing: Getting the Best out of Each Image

After culling, I let Aftershoot assist with editing—but again, it’s just a tool. It applies a base edit, but I always go through and refine everything in Lightroom and Photoshop to make sure the images match my style.

Sometimes, this process even helps me revisit images that didn’t make my initial cut. A shot that seemed ‘off’ at first might work beautifully with the right edit. AI helps me see the potential in images I might have otherwise overlooked.

Removing Distractions with Generative Fill

I also use Adobe’s Generative Fill to remove small distractions in photos—things like a stray exit sign, a misplaced bag, or an out-of-place object in the background. But it’s not magic, and it doesn’t always get it right. When needed, I step in and manually retouch the image to make sure everything looks natural.

Writing: AI Helps Me Find the Right Words

I’ll be honest—writing isn’t my strongest skill. That’s why I use AI to help with my blog posts. I still decide what I want to say, but AI helps me organise my thoughts and put them into words. (Yes, it even helped me write this post!)

Why AI Doesn’t Replace Me as a Photographer

At the end of the day, AI is just a tool—it doesn’t replace my experience, creativity, or decision-making. It helps with the technical side of things so I can focus more on storytelling, connection, and delivering the best possible experience to my couples.

If AI means I spend less time clicking through thousands of photos and more time perfecting the ones that matter, that’s a win in my book.
